What’s the deal with CBD?
We know you’ve heard of cannabis, but what about cannabidiol? Maybe not right? Cannabidiol, also referred to as CBD, is a magic substance that is edging its way into the mainstream to alleviate a range of physical and mental health conditions in anyone who so needs it. There’s a reason why numerous researchers and pop culture patrons are claiming it’s the healthcare trend of 2020. People are finding use for CBD in every avenue, from facials to coffees, from intimate massages to toilet paper (we’re being serious!); it’s a trend that’s here to stay, and for good reason.
CBD heals you from the inside out, nature’s little gift. For people with symptoms ranging from menstrual cramping to migraines, from epilepsy to chronic anxiety, CBD is for people who want to accept help from mother nature to improve their quality of life. It’s found in marijuana and hemp, both from the cannabis sativa plant. However it’s better to source CBD from hemp, as the CBD content is much higher and the levels of THC are naturally much lower making it easier to isolate and concentrate the CBD.
But don’t worry, you’re not going to be getting stoned and eating cookies after taking CBD, far from it. CBD is the non-psychoactive component of cannabis, but with all the same therapeutic benefits like lowering blood pressure, alleviating anxiety and modulating your hormones. So if your grandma refuses to accept your CBD gift for her arthritis hit her with some science: CBD doesn’t contain the chemical compound delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive component of cannabis so it’s not even chemically possible to feel any type of ‘high’ from taking this. Moreover, tell your Grandma that your brain makes certain cannabinoids on its own, so you’re just boosting your brain’s natural production.
So how does CBD work?
As mentioned, your body actually produces certain cannabinoids naturally, these are known as endocannabinoids. These endocannabinoids bind to and activate receptors on the surface of cells that signals the release of hormones and neurotransmitters that alter mood, decrease the perception of pain and relax muscular tension.
So without getting too deep into the science: when CBD is absorbed into the bloodstream, either dermally or orally, it attaches to the two major cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2. CBD then interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to increase anandamide levels by inhibiting fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH), which brings about the positive therapeutic benefits of CBD consumption.
What are the benefits of CBD?
So what are the benefits of CBD? Well, how long do you have? The benefits are extensive, and they’re not just placebo or a marketing ploy, clinical trials have repeatedly shown CBD to be beneficial for a range of medical conditions. Here are some examples of the research.
A clinical trial published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that in a group of participants with generalized social anxiety disorder (SAD), an oral dose of CBD significantly reduced subjective anxiety and altered brain activity associated with anxiety and stress. A systematic review on the use of CBD for insomnia found it to be significantly beneficial to improve quality and duration of sleep, reduce PTSD and decrease pain. A clinical trial found that CBD reduces inflammation to decrease pain in individuals with chronic pain conditions like arthritis.
CBD for women
We’re a company created to help women. While CBD can help anyone, our intention is to give women a space to feel empowered, to lead the fight against female focused conditions like menstrual pain and cramping, nausea and PMS symptoms like anxiety or sleep disturbances. Did you know that 80 percent of women experience severe period pain? PMS affects 75 percent of women, with anxiety being one of the main symptoms. We’re here to provide real relief for these women who are currently being ignored.
As shown in the above study, CBD reduces inflammation and helps to manage pain, making it beneficial for menstrual pain and cramping. This was articulated in a 2019 review in which a Doctor encourages prescribing CBD for patients with period pain and PMS symptoms, due to reports of a dramatic reduction in pain after just three months of consistent use. When CBD is ingested, it supplements the naturally occurring endocannabinoids which helps to regulate hormones in the female body, like stimulating the ovaries to produce more estrogen if necessary.
During a woman’s menstrual cycle, her hormones fluctuate which results in altering moods, breakouts, bloating and water retention, to name a few. Consuming CBD helps to regulate key hormones like melatonin, thyroid function, cortisol and insulin. It does this by supporting the ECS which strives to maintain homeostasis in the body, to balance it out, to ultimately feel optimal.
Being hormonally balanced will also help to improve skin health, but if your acne is not a result of a hormone imbalance, the topical application of CBD helps to adjust sebum production and reduce inflammation – two of the main causes of breakouts. A study published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation found that CBD use was an effective treatment for acne, without any of the same side effects of common acne treatments.
CBD is the number one health trend of 2020 because it has powerful therapeutic benefits, it’s free from side effects and derived from nature to improve the quality of your life. At OrganiGrow, we offer a range of CBD products specially designed for women to heal, empower and connect them to the earth. The way you support your body is the way you show up in the world, and CBD will help you do that from the inside out.
